Name; tekky Personal Journal; ![]() Contact; Character Name; Dream Canon; The Sandman Canon Point; Issue #48 (Brief Lives #8) Age; OLD. He's already lived from the formation of the universe up until what is 'present day' in canon, which is late 90's or early 2000's; time doesn't always work linearly in canon, and he's lived through several universes. In his 'default' physical appearance, he appears to be in his early 30's. House; Heimdall Power; Power Lending Personality; Dream is one of the Endless, seven beings that appeared as soon as the concepts that they represent came into being. His six siblings (Death, Delirium, Destruction, Destiny, Despair, and Desire) embody the concepts, which are present in any and all universes. Dream is the second eldest, and in canon, is about as old as eternity. His duty is to protect the Dreaming and dreams in general — daydreams, nightmares, and wishes alike. Dream takes his duties incredibly seriously, and is considered one of the most serious of the Endless — even more so than Death, his older sister. Most of his siblings (and pretty much everyone else, to be honest) consider him a stick in the mud, and consistently mock him for it. Most jokes he can't comprehend, and he usually manages to be several years behind pop culture no matter what year it is. Dream is not only serious but devoted to his work. He manages an enormous kingdom called the Dreaming, which is filled with denizens that support the dreams minds of any consciousness. His job is an important one, and he's well aware of it. When he returns from a period of confinement, his first actions after recovering his strength is rebuilding the Dreaming from its tattered remains. In the end of the series, he realizes that he can only change or die, and his dedication to duty and tradition leads to his choice of refusing to change his devotion, and eventually dies for it. Being nearly omnipotent and omniscient can lead down only a few paths, and Dream took the one that lead to too much arrogance. He collects names like one might collect friends, but he allows himself few friends, and honestly, some of those names? Kind of embarrassing. Prince of Stories, the Dreamking, that kind of thing. When his pride is damaged, he retaliates so harshly that it's pretty obvious that his pride is incredibly important to him. For instance, after being imprisoned by a magician and his son, he breaks free (after over 60 years) and immediately takes his revenge. The son, who had hardly even participated in the imprisonment but failed to let him free, Dream condemned to 'eternal waking'. Dream then disappears, leaving the son stuck in a looping nightmare until he dies. Another instance is when his girlfriend Nada answers in the negative to his proposal that she become his queen. After she throws herself from a cliff rather than abandon her country, he condemns her to hell and can only be convinced to free her after ten thousand years. Despite being incredibly old, however, Dream can be painfully immature. His retaliation to slights can be disproportionate; like some of his other siblings, he answers to any insult with far too much power rather than forgiving them. Furthermore, when he feels upset or annoyed, everyone ends up suffering for it, albeit usually in insignificant ways. When dumped by another girlfriend, the entirety of the Dreaming is drenched in rain for more than two weeks. Dream also has problems with empathy. He's older than almost anyone in his universe, but the motivations of most people are unclear to him. Additionally, Dream is less willing to acknowledge his problems and faults than most other characters. His actions with Nada are a great example of it, and later on, he only rectifies some of his errors after a great lecture by various members of his family. He knows his duties and follows them seriously, up to the point that he chooses death over betraying his responsibilities. Although ancient, Dream is still immature and arrogant and has plenty of flaws. |
